The reason is that the barber is not an expert in the medical field; rather, their expertise lies in cutting hair.

Now, let’s consider why people often believe and follow the advice given by influencers, even when they lack expertise in various subjects. Interestingly, even though you are aware that the influencer is not an expert, you might still be inclined to believe their claims. This phenomenon can be attributed to a social-psychological concept known as “the Halo effect.”

The Halo Effect: Understanding Its Significance

The Halo effect occurs when our positive impressions of people, brands, and products in one area lead us to have positive feelings in another area. Similarly, the Devil effect, also known as the Horns effect, happens when a negative impression based on one bad quality leads to negative perceptions in other unrelated areas.

Both the Halo effect and the Devil effect can influence our judgments and perceptions, often causing us to make assumptions or form opinions that may not be entirely rational or objective.

Well to conclude, The movements like “body positivity” or some other might be useful in bringing down the effect but still it is so deep rooted in our subconscious that it still becomes hard to completely be objective. To prove it Even “Infants” are biassed towards “attractive faces”.

For example, there are two strangers A and B. One is attractive and the other is not.  Both take turns in carrying the kid. There is a high possibility that the kid would not cry when carried by an attractive person.

That means “trustworthiness” is also being determined by “beauty”.

  • Upward comparisons can cause Shame, Inferiority complexes and Depressions and can impact one’s mental health.

The followers who claim to be “woke” or “enlightened” by subscribing to the influencers’ rhetoric may ironically be the most disconnected from critical thinking. They willingly subject themselves to the influence of a particular belief or ideology without engaging in thoughtful analysis or developing independent perspectives.

Underneath the glamorous façade, it becomes crucial to question the actual intelligence behind the words and actions of these influencers. While they may possess charisma, marketability, and a large following, their actual expertise and depth of knowledge may be lacking. An objective assessment of their statements reveals the shallow nature of their content and the absence of substantial intellectual contribution.
